Tom’s aviation journey started later than most, but his passion and drive led to a remarkable career. Growing up as a Kansas farm boy, he began flying at 28 years old, using aviation initially as a business tool. His journey quickly evolved into a lifelong passion, leading him to earn an ATP rating and become a seasoned airline captain.

After retiring from SWA, Tom Mahoney returned in 2023 to the local Part 141 flight school where he had started his professional career decades earlier. However, he quickly realized that the school had transformed into a large university-affiliated program, heavily influenced by academia. This environment prioritized academic formalities over practical, career-focused aviation training, leaving students ill-prepared for real-world aviation challenges.

Recognizing the gap between that training and industry needs, Tom was inspired to establish Hayland Farms Flight Training in 2024. His mission is to offer a hands-on, flexible training approach under FAR Part 61, designed to:

  • Focus on practical skills that align with the realities of aviation careers.
  • Provide accelerated programs that efficiently lead students to certifications.
  • Tailor training to individual goals, offering a more personal and adaptive learning experience than rigid Part 141 schools.

At Hayland Farms, Tom combines his extensive industry experience with a passion for teaching, ensuring students are well-prepared for professional success in a demanding aviation industry.
